The Faint Whiff of Respectability

Wow – at last! After what seems like a thousand years of banging at the local literary doors, they open abruptly and dump us all on the plush red carpet beyond. Five scruffy SF/Fantasy writers, including yours truly, get invited to speak at Aye Write, Glasgow’s prestigious answer to the Edinburgh International Book Festival (though we had to promise not to draw spaceships on the upholstery first).

If you fancy a peek at this momentous inaugural occurrence, we’ll be in the Mitchell Library at 8pm on Sunday March 7th. Should be a riot. Tickets are here.

Hope you can make it.

Imagine me on the plush red carpet, collecting my awards for books that span time.

I smile softly. My day has come..

I admit I am known to be half-crazed, yet I can’t help but notice some of my best ideas are coming to fruition.

Wish I was there. Collecting awards in place of you.

    P.S. Such tragedy..

I would have liked to make this, or even take part. Damn that interfering half-planet of distance. Rich – Ken Macleod and Hal Duncan, at least, are certainly published in the States, and are well-known writers within the genre. Deborah and Mike have several novels out in the UK.

I was thinking ‘Aye Write’ seemed rather right-on this year; I’m pleased that there is at least one ‘geek’ session!

The Mitchell events are really nice, this should be fun!

Hmm, I’ve always wanted to be respectably whiffy ;-)

  5. Rich says:

Gee, dude. Either I need to get out more, or your friends need to get published outside the British Isles.. not sure which. Only name I recognized was yours. I even went through the author list (mistakenly thinking you would be listed thereon) and did not find a single name I recognized.

Would love to be a fly on the wall, none-the-less. Love to hear what you all have to say on the subject.
    Little far to go, however.

By the by – you should avail yourself of the book, Daemon by Daniel Suarez. Thinking you’d really like it. There’s a follow-up to it, as well, Freedom TM

  6. Swainson says:

I’d love to come; damn those 462 miles to get there that mean I can’t make it.

Any plans to come down south? Brighton in particular?

Looking at the other authors you should have a good blast.

    Any more book sales??

    Hurrah!

Excellent news! Thrilled to see that SF/Fantasy is getting taken a *little* bit more seriously. Looks like it should be an interesting evening.

    Hurroo!

I, sadly, probably won’t be able to make it. :(

I do hope it goes well – be nice to see genre SF to get a little more acceptance in the mainstream (hey, if historical fiction can win a Booker!)

  8. Daphne says:

So you do occasionally leave the hotel in search for some intellectual company.

I am wondering who your date is? Hollywood hookers? Or a mistress? Or a goody wholesome wife?

  9. Baby L ON says:

Talk about respectability and decency, today somone called out on live air, “Filthy Whore, will you marry me?”

I’m making a few demands of my own. We shall see what happens.

    True comedic Arabic bliss.

    don’t see why not……

Can’t help but notice that whiffing at things isn’t that respectable.

    Congrats Richard!

    Ravi.

  15. Jon says:

Is the Cold Commands slated for release in September? Did I read that right?

  16. Chase Meridian says:

Do you have any more author’s signed copies of any of your works? I give your books away frequently to friends, so I could use a copy of Altered Carbon or Thirteen. Espeically thirteen. I tend to think it was probably one of your greatest works, and I have not yet finished it yet.

    To Infinity,

  17. Drake Bodan says:

Thanks for signing my books Richard. Atleast you now know there is one of your one thousand living nearby and appreciates your work.

    Cheers,
    Dave

  18. Chase Meridian says:

I miss your venom and arrogance. Write more!! Take an afternoon off to pr yourself.
